4 – 16 May 2009

The new Australian Festival for Young People team is now in the process of developing Come Out 2009. We invite you to express your interest in being involved.

The theme for the 2009 festival is Colliding Worlds. Artistic Director Jason Cross and Associate Artistic Director Sasha Zahra ask companies and artists to consider the journey that we take when our personal worlds collide; can collision be prevented?; how do we survive collision?; what happens when two countries, two different worlds collide and why?

In lead up to the Come Out 2009 (4 – 16 May), we seek to stimulate further dialogue for collective programming of work that may be in existence, in development or developed for future presentation. We invite artists, companies, collectives and communities who work across all art forms of theatre, dance, film, circus, physical theatre, music, puppetry, visual art, new media, outdoor theatre and installation to submit proposals for new work to be included in the 2009 or future festivals.

Download and submit your Expression of Interest by 15 February 2008.

We are also committed to nurturing the development of new contemporary work through our commissions program. Our Artistic Director will be available to discuss our commissioning process from February 2008.

Come Out and ASSITEJ

There are many similarities and several differences between the Come Out Festival and the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival:

  • Both Come Out and the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival are a wonderful way to open the door to the arts for children and young people
  • Come Out respects and involves children and young people as both audiences and artists, while the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival is a wonderful opportunity for young people to focus on seeing performances
  • Come Out covers EVERY art form, while the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival is dedicated to the performing arts, even though there’ll be related events exploring other art forms
  • Come Out rocks South Australia every two years, while the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival is a massive one-off opportunity
  • Come Out is statewide, while the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival will focus primarily on the metropolitan area, with the Adelaide Festival Centre as the Festival Hub
  • Both Come Out and the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival are a great way to explore the arts in the classroom because both events are supported by teaching material for educators and our bookings systems are very teacher-friendly. The Come Out Festival is proud to have a long and extremely well developed partnership with the Department of Education and Children’s Services, which will benefit the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival

The Artistic Director of the ASSITEJ Congress and Performing Arts Festival is Jason Cross, who is also the Artistic Director of Come Out 2009. We urge everyone to keep informed about the wonderful insights and opportunities ASSITEJ will provide.
