Allwrite! is Australia’s largest literature festival for children and young people, working throughout Come Out to highlight the importance of the written word and image to every aspect of the arts.
We are delighted that the 2005 Allwrite! Metro 5-day program will be held in the newly refurbished State Library on North Terrace with its air-conditioned rooms and up-to-the-minute technology. We thank the State Library for hosting Allwrite! 2005.
Allwrite! is made up of Meet the Writer/Illustrator sessions, workshops, and special events – each of which emphasise different ways for young people to interact with the creators of literature. In the Meet the Writer and Meet the Illustrator sessions, young people will get to meet, listen to and ask questions of their favourite authors and illustrators, in a relaxed setting, with time for questions toward the end of each 45 minute session. Workshops are a fantastically popular way for young people to interact with authors, poets, playwrights and illustrators. Metro Allwrite! runs from Monday to Friday, March 14 to 18 2005.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are dedicated to primary schools students in our Primary All-Star days, presenting Meet the Writer sessions and Interactive Workshops.
Come and meet Catherine Jinks, who loves to talk about her novels of historical and fantasy fiction and Elizabeth Hutchins, who always sets her books in places she knows and loves. Have fun with Stephen Michael King, whose picture books have been dramatised and Elizabeth Honey, who will show very young audiences how much fun you can have with performance poetry.
From Doodle To Digital on Thursday March 17 is devoted to Illustrators, Cartoonists and Digital artists. From Doodleto Digital will celebrate book art in a day of meeting and talking to some of our most highly regarded illustrators. Come to a workshop with Digital Artist Carol McLean- Carr or meet David Kennett, the wonderful wildlife illustrator.
Friday March 18 t is Sci-Fantastic, devoted to the genre of Fantasy and Sci-Fi writing. The ever-increasing popularity of this style of fiction led to dedicating a full day to hearing and working with the absolute best in this field.
Hear Adelaide-based Sean Williams In Conversation with Isobelle Carmody and Glenn Lumsden. Glenn is well-known for his cartoons in Phantom Comics, Sean Williams for his work on the Star Wars books and Isobelle Carmody for her award-winning Obernewtynseries. Don’t miss them!
A number of shows in the festival’s performance program relate directly to Allwrite! Patch Theatre Company presents Emily Loves to Bounce, a fabulous new show drawn from five picture books by writer/illustrator Stephen Michael King, while Windmill Performing Arts presents performances of The Green Sheep by Mem Fox, designed especially for babies and very young children and their families. Parents and teachers can catch Mem at Elder Hall on Wednesday March 16 in a special evening session about the magic of reading aloud to children. Getting Physical is a fabulous show about the relationship between words, music and movement.
In the Schools Touring program there’s Hip Hop Monologues led by Fin Kruckemeyer, the recipient of a New Writers Initiative Grant from the Australia Council’s Literature Board. Also touring is The Ides, an exciting new play written by young South Australian, Matthew Clayfield.
Literature meets visual art at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Artspace, which is hosting an exhibition of The Waterhole bringing to life the inspiring and imaginative work of award- winning children’s author and illustrator, Graeme Base.
And finally, we invite young people to be writers themselves in The Poetry Competition – Reclaiming Humanity, a statewide poetry competition exploring the festival theme, Being Human.
