“A work by Matthew Clayfield is a fantastic addition to the Festival program. Matthew is well known to the Come Out team, having been the state winner of two successive Crank! short film competitions. The Ides is as well crafted as his films and is grounded in the confusing reality of adolescence with spooky accuracy.”
Come Out Festival Director Sally Chance
The Ides explores the aimless and troubled nature of teenage invincibility - when ego is king and the self is all there is. Set in a high school dressing room over the course of one day, The Ides is a rare look into the life of 17 year old Fraser - a boy trying to discover who he really is, what he lusts after and the many roles he plays in order to survive. Ultimately we are witness to his deliberate exposure where we see a boy in search of the basic human need ... the need for love and acceptance.
The Ides was written by 17 year old Matthew Clayfield, winner of the 2003 State Theatre Young Guns Playwriting Competition. This non-didactic production is created by four young actors fresh from Adelaide Centre of the Arts, working alongside director Alyson ‘Daisy’ Brown, co-director of Bushfire - Come Out 2003.
The Ides opens with the question: What do we all hope to gain in this world? And it leaves us with the answer... A voice and someone to hear it!
