Democracy Comes to South Australia

Teachers and students - come out and have your say!

This special exhibition, presented by the History Trust of SA and State Electoral Office - marks the 150th anniversary of South Australia’s democracy. During Come Out, students are invited to participate in one of the great debates of the 1890s – votes for women – by taking part in a role play. South Australia was the first Australian colony to give women the vote and the first place in the world to allow them to stand for parliament. Reading from a script prepared by the History Trust, students will play the parts of both supporters and crusty old opponents of the campaign. The script of the play will be available at www.history.sa.gov.au and students will gain most from the experience when they are prepared for their roles beforehand.
