Stories from the Pacific Islands Gallery at the South Australian Museum
The spectacular old glass lantern ceiling in the Pacific Islands Gallery has been uncovered. The South Australian Museum’s rich display of artefacts made by Pacific Islander people can now be seen in a new light. In a program developed by Chris Nobbs, our Come Out stage is set for storytelling, film and hands-on activities to engage students in inquiry-based learning. The traditional lifestyles and beliefs of the Pacific Islander people are examined, with a special focus on contemporary life in the region today.
Students will explore the gallery and discover the extraordinary Hemlaut dance masks from New Britain, the Malangan Lasisi canoe from New Ireland, a Trobriand Islands outrigger canoe, carved wooden utensils, sophisticated fishing, hunting and gathering equipment and much more.
Teaching material available at the Museum site.
